Newquay Dramatic Society is already busy rehearsing its summer season of comedy despite the dreadful weather conditions of late.
“Yes, Prime Minister” takes to stage 27th May and “Dress Rehearsal” starts 12th August. Each play will run for 10 weeks every Tuesday and Wednesday performing at their usual venue Lane Theatre, Newquay. Cast and crew of both plays attended a photo session together with director Sheila Lines, who is thrilled to announce the programme for this year’s summer season. These two plays will do just that,” Sheila continued; “Our priority this year is comedy and that is what we at Newquay Dramatic Society will be bringing you.”The first play “Yes, Prime Minister” needs very little introduction and has only just been released for amateurs to perform.
The production has just completed a huge professional tour of the country at the end of last year. Newquay Dramatic Society will be the first amateur group to perform this play in Cornwall, if not the country. This new play, based on the well-known TV hit series ‘Yes Minister’ follows in a similar vein to the original TV series – it is a laugh a minute! It follows the career of Jim Hacker who is now the Prime Minister and all the old favourites are there as well, with some new characters thrown in.
It starts 27th May and runs until 30th July every Tuesday/Wednesday, curtain up at 8pm. “Dress Rehearsal” by Charles Stott is another first for Newquay Dramatic Society not only is this a brand new play but also a World Premiere. Director Sheila Lines admits the play struck a chord with her as it is all about an Amateur Dramatic Group that is told that the dates on their publicity is wrong and they cannot afford to have the posters printed again and anyway the Vicar is quite happy that the play will be going ahead 6weeks early. In fact the day after, so when all the cast arrive at what they think is a rehearsal they are told that this is actually their dress rehearsal as the show goes up the next evening. The director has to convince them all that they are ready and that everything ‘will be alright on the night’!
This is probably one of the worst nightmares that a director could have and as you can imagine hilariously funny. “Dress Rehearsal” starts 12th August and finishes 15th October.
