– Fistral Beach, Cornwall –
The UK’s biggest surf and music event, Boardmasters opened today at Fistral Beach as the blazing sun shone down on one of the most stunning locations in Cornwall, Fistral Beach. Huge crowds gathered to watch all the sporting action on Day 1 including the first rounds of the International Surf Competitions and the public BMX and skate sessions.
SURF HIGHLIGHTS:
Nick Williams, Surf commentator takes us through what happening at the beach:
Day 1 got off to a great start as we had far more surf than we expected! We got through the Animal Pro Junior first this morning, 1st round of the Open and the SunGod Womens and lastly the U12s in the Whipper Snappers comp. It’s always fun and exciting at Fistral but the youngsters showed real determination as for them these waves are at shoulder to head height! We were blessed today with sunny weather and a fully packed beach. Tomorrow we’re looking to start with a lower tide at 8am beginning with the Open. Friday is most dodgy looking surf but there are huge tides and big swell on its way later in the week. It’s been a great day with the surf village pumping and the competitors are stoked. We can’t ask for a whole lot more apart from a big party tonight!
Away from the beach the Public BMX and Skate sessions saw crowds packed around the mini ramp to see a whole host of household names and local rippers throwing down. The calibre of the public practice wet the appetite for tomorrow’s already highly anticipated Public BMX and Skate competition.
BMX HIGHLIGHTS:
BMX MC James Hitchcox takes us through what happened on the ramp:
Pretty chilled practice today as people are still arriving. Great to see the course has been moved to its new spot with the rad view. The local lads rolled up early doors including a couple of PRO riders hungry for practice. Expect things to heat up in the AM comp tomorrow with the strong South-West BMX local contenders. Local rippers brothers Ben Hanlan and Kane Hanlan turned up landing Bar no handers and Fakie whips. Ben Keegan landed a tidy flair and some other young surprise riders came out of the woodwork. Tomorrow’s AM comp will see local rippers Ben Keegan, Ben Hanlan, Danny Kent, Lee Carter, Tom Skidmore all aiming for the podium and top spot to qualify into the PRO comp 2.30pm tomorrow.
SKATE HIGHLIGHTS:
Skate MC Marc Churchill takes us through what happened on the ramp:
Really nice mellow vibes today on the mini ramp to get well into the swing of the week. We had several Pros turned up including Carl Wilson, Finley Kirkby, Jake Anderson, Manfred Kutz, Rob Jones and Zak Kutz trying to get in early practice. We had loads of locals turning up grafting around and shredding and can’t wait for the Pro comps on Friday! Tomorrow see’s Skate Open sessions and comp from 11am with the winner of each gaining automatic entry into the Pro Qualifiers. Remember you need a helmet to compete!
Boardmasters Fistral Beach site is open, no ticket necessary so festival-goers and locals are free to come down and take in all the sporting action in their own time.
